How to choose your size by body measurements

To find your ideal size you need three measurements.

Waist: measure around your natural waistline, usually the narrowest part of your torso.

Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

Thighs: measure around the fullest part of one thigh.

A note on the waist: our trousers have an adjustable waist, so if the size fits your hips and thighs comfortably, the waist can differ by roughly 20% and still fit well.

Measuring while seated or lying down

Standing is not always possible, and you can measure just as accurately sitting in your chair or lying down.

Waist: if you are seated, lean slightly to one side to expose your natural waistline. Lying down, simply find your natural waist and measure around it.

Hips: pass the tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, keeping it as level as you can.

Thighs: measure around the fullest part of one thigh with the leg relaxed.

No measuring tape? Use a piece of string

A ribbon, rope or piece of string works just as well.

Wrap it comfortably around the area you are measuring while seated or lying down, mark the point where it overlaps, then lay it flat and measure the length with a ruler.

Compare with a garment you already own

For an even closer fit, measure a pair of trousers or a top that already fits you well.

Lay the item flat, measure the relevant dimensions such as inseam, waist width and hip width for trousers, or chest width and sleeve length for tops, then compare them with the garment measurements on the product page.

Our trousers have an adjustable waist, so if the hips and thighs fit, the waist can differ by around 20% and still fit well. Measuring while seated or lying down is fine — that is how most of our customers do it.

Warmth and protection for wheelchair users

The Vilber’s Comfort Modular (aka Mermaid) is a dedicated leg cover designed to provide high-performance warmth and protection for wheelchair users during cold winter conditions. Designed for active wheelchairs, where feet on the footrest are positioned close together. Crafted with technical precision and care, this cover helps maintain independence and comfort when navigating snow or chilly environments. It covers legs and top of the feet over the shoes.

We understand that equipment should work with you, not against you. The ThermoShell Mermaid is designed for quick, independent use or easy assistance from a caregiver:

Magnetic Zippers: The zippers feature a magnetic base that clicks together effortlessly, allowing for easy closure even with limited dexterity.
Easy On/Off: The wrap-around design ensures the cover can be put on or removed without significant effort.
Secure Fit: An integrated rubber band prevents the cover from sliding down during movement.
Modular Compatibility: For comprehensive coverage, it can be paired with the ThermoShell/ Combi Base, creating a modular system that protects both the spine and bottom.

Technical Specifications

This is a 3-ply item. Following rigorous standards, the materials are selected for durability and thermal efficiency:

Outer Shell (Oxford PU 200gsm):
Material: 100% Polyester with a PU membrane.

Durability:Highly resistant to creases, tearing, and rubbing.
Water Repellency: This fabric is water-resistant and designed to withstand snow and light rain. Please note it is not 100% waterproof under high pressure (such as heavy rain or pressure washing).
Safety: Certified under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, ensuring it is tested for harmful substances.

Insulation (3M™ Thinsulate™ Type J250):

Warmth: Uses 3M™ Thinsulate™ Water-Resistant Insulation (Type J), providing exceptional warmth without unnecessary bulk.
Efficiency: The J250 grade offers a high thermal resistance (R-value of 3.9).
Safety & Ethics: The insulation meets bluesign® criteria for environmental safety and is hypoallergenic.

Inner Lining:

Comfort: Lined with 100% Polyester Polar Fleece for a soft, luxurious feel against the legs. Fast drying after wash.

Understanding Thermal Resistance (R-value).

The R-value of 3.9 is a measurement of the material's ability to resist heat flow. Higher is Warmer: The higher the R-value, the better the material is at trapping your body heat inside the cover.

Insulation Efficiency: A rating of 3.9 indicates very high thermal resistance for synthetic insulation, designed to keep the wearer warm even when they are not generating much body heat through movement.

Comfortable Temperature Range: While specific comfort temperatures depend on personal circulation and what layers are worn underneath, the Vilber’s ThermoShell Mermaid is engineered for true winter conditions.

Freezing Conditions: With 250g Thinsulate, this product is designed for temperatures well below 0°C and is specifically intended for use in snow and ice.

Deep Cold: Based on the high R-value of 3.9 and the added wind protection of the Oxford outer shell, this cover is suitable for "deep winter" (typically -10°C to -20°C), provided the user is wearing appropriate base layers. For warmth in extra cold conditions we suggest our Combi sacks with doubled 3M Thinsulate 250J insulation and additional layer of neoprene under feet and bottom. Static Warmth: Because wheelchair users often have reduced leg movement to generate heat, this high-density insulation is vital for maintaining a safe body temperature during extended periods outdoors in the cold. Key Performance Factors

Water Resistance: The individual fibers of inner insulation absorb less than 1% of their weight in water, meaning the insulation maintains its "loft" and warmth even in damp, snowy conditions.

Wind Protection: The 200gsm Oxford fabric acts as a barrier against wind chill, which is often the primary cause of heat loss when moving in a wheelchair.

Sizing and Colors

The ThermoShell Mermaid is available in two lengths and multiple sizes to ensure a proper fit:

Normal length: Optimized for user heights between 158–175 cm.
Long length: Optimized for user heights between 176–190 cm.

Care and Maintenance

To maintain the integrity of the technical fabrics and insulation, please follow these guidelines based on the material data sheets:

Washing: Machine wash warm (40 C) on a delicate cycle. Use mild detergents; avoid chlorine bleach. Do not tumble dry, hang to dry.

Ironing: Do not steam press. Use a cool iron or steam only if necessary.

General Use: This is a performance garment designed for winter weather. To maintain its longevity, avoid submerging it in deep mud or using abrasive cleaning methods like pressure washing.

Where we ship
All of Europe, including non-EU countries such as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Serbia and Montenegro. Outside Europe we ship to the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel and South Africa.

We currently do not ship to Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the rest of Asia, the rest of Africa or South America.

Duties and taxes
For the whole EU, Norway, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand we pay the duties and taxes ourselves — your parcel arrives at your door with nothing extra to pay.

For all other destinations, customs duties and local taxes are payable by the buyer on arrival. For the United Kingdom, adaptive clothing is in principle VAT exempt, but there is no dedicated customs code for these products, so in practice the charge is usually collected at the border and has to be reclaimed from HMRC afterwards.

Dispatch and delivery
Orders are dispatched within 5 working days unless the product page states otherwise. Delivery time then depends on the destination country, the carrier and the delivery method you choose. In exceptional cases, such as pre-sale items, we reserve the right to dispatch within up to 45 calendar days, and we will always tell you beforehand.

We deliver with parcel lockers or courier services. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout, before you confirm the order.

Returns and exchanges
We do not provide return labels, and return shipping is paid by the buyer. If you would like a different size, we offer one free exchange per order. If you are unsure about sizing, fit or any detail of the product, contact us before ordering — we will help you choose the right option.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to receive my order?

Many of our products are in stock, others are made to order. In most cases we ship within 1 to 5 days. If demand is unusually high, which tends to happen after exhibitions, we let you know about any delay. The same applies to orders that include a length adjustment.

What are the shipping costs?

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on your delivery address and selected shipping method. Orders can be delivered by courier or to an available parcel locker or collection point.

Can I return an item, and can you send me a return label?

You have two months from delivery to return an item. We set that period deliberately long, knowing how unpredictable daily life can be.

As a small workshop we cannot provide prepaid return labels, so returns are sent at your own cost. Once we receive and inspect the item we refund you within 3 business days. If you want to exchange for a different size, we cover sending the replacement once. Items made to your own measurements cannot be returned.

Is your clothing easy to wash and care for?

Yes, and we design for it deliberately. Even our multi-layer insulated pieces go through a regular washing machine cycle. Adaptive clothing should fit into your routine, not add another complicated step to it.

How does the front access panel work?

On garments with this feature the front panel drops down to give direct access for catheterisation without removing your trousers. From the outside it looks like an ordinary pocket, so the function stays private unless you choose to use it.

Esmu priecīga, ka manā garderobē ir pievienojies šis siltais kāju maiss. Tas ne tikai pilda savas funkcijas, bet arī vizuāli skaisti izskatās. Nu jau nevaru iedomāties garās pastaigas bez tā, jo tas lieliski pasargā no aukstuma un pastaigas laikā kājas nenosalst. Tā bija lielākā problēma, ar ko saskāros rudens un ziemas mēnešos – vienmēr pēc ilgākas pastaigas kājas bija ledus aukstas, bet nu, pateicoties šim kāju maisam, tās vienmēr ir siltumā. Kāju maisa sēžamā daļa pasargā muguru no vēja. Tāpat tas lieliski pasargā no nokrišņiem un izmirkšanas gan kājas, gan ratiņkrēslu. Un to ir ļoti viegli gan uzvilkt, gan novilkt. No sirds to iesaku!

This is just great!

I am so glad, I purchased this set, although I was hesitating a bit. The ease of putting it on (the magnetic zips absolutely help) and the snug feeling of warm fleece inside lets me be more active outside. I do recommend this product, and I also love, that the inside of this shell is not slippery - it stays on the place and also I do not slide downwards myself.
